Weg è la sintesi artistica della carriera di Luca Albano, dj e producer italiano che da diversi anni vive a Berlino. Con dj set importanti in club internazionali Luca ha recentemente iniziato questo nuovo progetto. Una storia che scopriamo partendo dal lavoro in studio, dal network italiano che si è sviluppato nella capitale tedesca ed infine dai mutamenti della stessa Berlino in termini di club culture.

Ciao Luca, benvenuto su Dj Mag Italia. Avevamo già avuto occasione di parlare con te in una veste diversa, più precisamente nel progetto Dhon. Cos’è cambiato nel corso di quest’anno nella tua vita artistica?
Ciao a tutti, e grazie dell’invito, è sempre un piacere rivedersi. Sì, abbiamo parlato del progetto Dhon che è ancora attivo e che stiamo sviluppando nelle sonorità e nella direzione che avrà il nuovo live. Nel frattempo molto è cambiato nella mia vita artistica e ho iniziato questo nuovo progetto solista, ovvero Weg, che in tedesco vuol dire “percorso” o “via”.Questa decisione per me è molto importante perché non si tratta solo di un nuovo moniker ma anche di una diversa ispirazione artistica.

Recentemente è uscita la tua release “Weisheit” su Serialism con tracce nuove ed altre che hanno avuto una gestazione più complessa, ce ne puoi parlare?
Vivere a Berlino mi ha permesso sempre di conoscere nuovi artisti e ad Ottobre 2013 sono stato invitato dalla False Manner Production e da Serialism a partecipare al videoclip di Quenum – Face to Face (Cassy Remix). E’ stata la mia prima volta come attore ma l’esperienza mi è piaciuta e ho iniziato a partecipare ad altri video. Tra me e Cesare vs. Disorder, proprietario della label, è nato un rapporto di amicizia che mi ha spinto a proporgli delle tracce per Serialism e sono piaciute. L’EP è il risultato di due anni di ascolto ed esplorazione di nuovi suoni e cerca di aggiungere alle melodie un’anima e una profondità che offrono all’ascoltatore un modo diverso di ascoltare e godere della musica.

Un altro progetto rilevante nel quale sei coinvolto direttamente è “Impress”, la one night “made in Italy” che prende vita al Watergate. Avete annunciato il prossimo appuntamento che sarà l’11 Marzo. Com’è andata la prima?
Si, ad inizio 2014 io e Marco Effe abbiamo pensato di proporre agli amici del Watergate una one night e la prima che è stata a settembre è stata davvero impressionante. L’introduzione è stata di Francesco Carone con l’utilizzo solamente del pianoforte e dopo tanti anni spesi nel waterfloor a sentire musica elettronica ascoltare un sound diverso e vedere le persone riunite come in un concerto è stato molto bello. Abbiamo invitato Ilario Alicante come ospite ed il mix di questi due stili è stato perfetto. Il prossimo appuntamento sarà l’11 marzo ma sulla pagina facebook Impress daremo tutte le news.

Nel corso dell’ultimo anno hai viaggiato molto tornando anche in Italia per esibirti in alcuni party. Riesci comunque a rimanere focalizzato sul lavoro in studio?
Beh è sempre difficile riuscire a conciliare il tutto ma nell’ultimo periodo sto curando molto questo aspetto, inoltre sto collaborando molto con altri produttori il che mi da la possibilità di sperimentare sonorità nuove Ambient o Dubstep in differenti progetti. Credo sia fondamentale trovare un bilanciamento per entrambe le cose perché c’è sempre bisogno di crescere e migliorare anche come artista.

Sembra che Berlino stia vivendo un momento di mutamento, in particolare sulla legislazione relativa ai club e sulla loro delocalizzazione fuori dal centro urbano. So che sei coinvolto in un progetto ambizioso in questo senso ma vorrei che ci svelassi qualcosa di più in merito.
I cambiamenti ci sono sempre soprattutto in una città dinamica come Berlino. Si stanno verificando molti cambiamenti sulle leggi riguardo i club e molti locali aprono in periferia o fuori città, questo porterà Berlino ad avere tanti piccoli villaggi con musica, ristorazione ed eventi culturali. Sono molto fortunato ad essere parte del progetto Maiwald che è una splendida location vicino all’aeroporto di Tegel e dopo il party di Halloween mi sono innamorato del suo pubblico e delle persone coinvolte nel progetto. Se siete a Berlino per Capodanno vi suggerisco di farci un salto.

Essendo un artista con diversi anni di esperienza come ti senti di giudicare lo stato di salute attuale della scena berlinese? Credi che siamo in un momento in cui il mercato è saturo o ci sono ancora margini di sviluppo?
Penso che ti dia differenti possibilità di scelta e lo spirito di libertà è sempre nell’aria ma l’evoluzione porta anche ai cambiamenti e quando più persone sono coinvolte nella scena questo influenza anche la società e gli aspetti culturali. Sono stato fortunato nei primi anni a Berlino a conoscere tanti “berliners” che mi hanno insegnato come concepire il party e capire lo spirito di Berlino scoprendo sempre location nuove. Alcuni locali hanno perso il loro spirito originario il che è interessante ed originale per alcuni aspetti, ma due anni fa era più confortevole e meno internazionale. Questo accade quando diventi la capitale della musica elettronica.

Weg, un nuovo pseudonimo per una fase nuova della tua carriera. Come interpreti questo cambiamento?
Come ho detto prima si tratta di un percorso nuovo in cui non voglio cimentarmi solo con la minimal o la techno ma anche con esperienze sperimentali. Ho iniziato con Serialism e continuerò a lavorare con loro e con le etichette di altri amici. Tutta la musica che produrrò sarà caratterizzata da pad e melodie con groove ipnotici che facciano concentrare l’ascoltatore sui dettagli della traccia. Alcune di queste nuove produzioni sono già state approvate dalla Wet Cellar di Salvo Castelli e da Dirty Session Records di Luca Bear.

Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare in futuro a livello di produzioni e di performance da te?
Sto lavorando ad un album che sarà presentato con un live nel corso del nuovo anno. Sarò concentrato inoltre sugli eventi “Impress” al Watergate e al progetto Maiwald. Il 15 gennaio suonerò al party “People Like Us” all’Arena Club e ovviamente vi aspetto per Capodanno!

Luca Hello, welcome to DJ Mag Italy. We had already had the opportunity to talk to you in a different guise, more precisely in the project Dhon. What has changed this year in your artistic life?
Hello everyone and thank you for your invitation and i´m always happy to see you. Yes we talked about Dhon and the project is still going on. Now we are focusing on how we want to develop it and which style propose during our liveset. Meanwhile this year changed a lot in my artistic life and i started a new solo project called Weg which is the german word for “path” or “away”. The concept has a high value for me since it marks not only a change in the name but also in my music ispiration. I would like to develop both concepts togheter at some point and me and Jack are planning to do it next year and focused now to search and found our wave.

Recently, exit your release “Weisheit” of serialism with new tracks and others who have had a pregnancy more complex, can you talk?
Living in Berlin gave me the chance to met always many artists and during October 2013 i was invited from the False Manner Productions and Serialism crew to take part of the videoclip of Quenum – Face to Face (Cassy Remix). It was my first time as “actor” and i really enjoyed it and i started to perform for many more videos. This experience made me closer to them and the friendship with Cesare Vs Disorder, the owner of the label, give me the ispiration to propose some tracks for the labek and he liked it. The ep is just the result of 2 years of exploring new sounds and try to give to the melodies kind of soul and deepness which give to the listener different way to feel and enjoy the music.

Another important project in which you are involved directly is “Impress”, the one night “made in Italy” that comes to life at the Watergate. Have announced that the next round will be on March 11. How was your first?
Yes in the beginning of 2014 me and Marco Effe had the idea to propose Watergate crew a one night and the first one on 12 September was really impressive. We had in the beginning Francesco Carone which did an introduction only piano and after many years spent in the waterfloor with electronic music was just an amazing feeling to listen some different style of music and the people listening to his music like a real concert. We invited Ilario Alicante as our guest and the mix of all the music style was a perfect combination. Over the last year you’ve traveled extensively to perform in some party. You still can stay focused on the job in the studio?
Well it’s always hard to combine but i’ve been really taking care about it and recently i’m also collaborating with many different producers which give me the chance to experiment more and go throw different style of music, like for example some Ambient or Dubstep project too. I think it’s really important to manage your bookings and studio time cause both sides needs to be improved at the same time and they bring you different way of ispiration and keep growing the artist’s soul.

It seems that Berlin is experiencing a time of change, particularly on legislation pertaining to the clubs and their relocation outside the village. I know you’re involved in an ambitious project in this way but I wish there were to disclose anything more about.
Changes are always happenning and expecially in a dynamic city like Berlin. Many changes regarding the law are happenning and many clubs are opening outside the city which will bring to Berlin to have some nice little villages with music, food and cultural event. I´m really luck to be part of the project called Maiwald which is a nice location near Tegel Airport and after the Halloween opening party, i totally fall in love with it and the people involved. If you are in Berlin for the NYE I suggest you to have a look for it.

Being an artist with many years of experience as you feel you judge the current health status of the Berlin scene? You think we’re in a time when the market is saturated or there is still room for development?
I think it gives you different choices and the freedom it´s always in the air but evolution brings also changes and when more people are involved in the scene these touches also the society and the culture side. I´ve been really lucky in my first years in Berlin to know many “berliners” that teach me how to party and to see the real soul of berlin´s club scene and always discover new places. Actually many clubs are still special but they lost a bit he original soul and they going in a different way , which is still cool and original for some aspects, but couple of years ago it was more cosy and less international feelings, but this is the effect of Berlin being the capital of electronic music.

Weg, a new nickname for a new phase of your career. How do you interpret this change?
As I said before it´s a totally new path and i want to explore not only the minimal and techno scene, but also something more experimental like ambient or dubstep. I started with Serialism family and i will keep the relation beside other friend´s label and projects. All the music i will release will be touched always with emotional pad and melodies and trippy groove which will make the listener attached to his chair and be concentrated on the details of the track and Salvo Castelli´s Wet Cellar Records and Luca Bear´s Dirty Session Records , to name a few labels , have already approved some of my new productions.

What can we expect in the future in terms of production and performance by you?
I´m working on an album which will be then presented as liveset next year and of course concentrated in the nights in Watergate and develop the Maiwald project. I will be part of “People Like Us” party in Arena Club in Berlin on the 8th January and keep collaboration as dj and producer with all my label´s friend and parties. As i said before next Impress Party in Watergate will be on 11th March and Maiwald will be opened for the NYE so feel free to come over and celebrate with us.
